Spring Cleaning Your Home’s Exterior

Your home protects you from the elements but you have to protect it a little too. Spring is upon us and it might be time to start thinking about cleaning up the outside of your house. A little maintenance can help keep your home looking great and make it last a long time.

Fortunately, cleaning the outside of your home is easier than you might think. With just a little time and the right tool you can have your home looking ready for company.

https://www.bobvila.com/articles/how-to-clean-wood-siding/?How to Clean Wood Siding – Bob Vila Think your wood siding needs a fresh coat of paint? Maybe. Or it could be that your wood clapboard, lap, or shingle siding simply needs a thorough cleaning.

Homeowners have always prized wood for its unparalleled appearance, but like any siding material, it requires periodic maintenance. With wood in particular, the challenge is to avoid doing more harm than good. For instance, you might be tempted to clean wood siding with a pressure washer, thinking it would make quick work of things. Do so at your own risk. Using such a high-powered tool can actually cause several types of damage, including stripped paint, gouged boards, and loosened caulk. Plus, if the pressure washer manages to send water through the joints and behind the boards, the errant moisture could end up fostering mold growth or triggering wood rot. In short, unless you’re deeply familiar with the operation of a pressure washer, don’t point one at the most visible part of your home.

Besides, if you really want to give new life to your wood siding, it’s likely that water alone won’t do the trick—you’ll need to scrub too. A full-featured garden hose attachment like the HYDE PivotPro Outdoor Cleaning Wand includes everything you need to achieve a satisfying, beautiful result. Read on to learn how to clean wood siding safely and effectively with a single tool. Read more…

How Hail Damage Can Effect Your Roof

If you live in Texas, you’re already familiar with hailstorms. In fact, you may have had a car damaged by one, a window, maybe even a boat or motorcycle. But have you ever considered what it could be doing to your roof?

Hail can cause major roof damage that is sometimes undetectable without a professional inspection. We’ve put together a list that will help you know what to look for after a hailstorm occurs.

Metal roofs: You’ll want to look for small indentations or “dents”. Depending on the size of the hail, this type of damage should be easy to identify.

Asphalt: Look for missing pieces within the asphalt. You’ll see areas on the shingle that have exposed, black substrate. The granules of the asphalt will have been damaged or knocked off.

Shingles: The first thing you’ll notice is bruising in the shingles. Dents from hail will not always be visible so if you simply run your hand or a cloth over them you can feel small dimples on the surface. While pressing on it, if you feel movement, this is a clear sign that the shingles have already begun deteriorating. If the shingles are cracked, this is a clear sign of hail damage and needs to be addressed immediately.

Wood Roofs: When hailstorms impact a wood surface the marks left over will be gray or discolored. This is where surface has been removed from the hail. Hail damage to wood roofs that don’t split or puncture the wood in any way are not as damaging.

Gutters: If the gutters of your home were clean before the storm then you may easily notice that they will be full of granules and debris, which is a clear sign that the there has been roof wear and tear caused by the hail.

Still not sure you’ll be able to recognize hail damage on your roof? After any hailstorm, if you see tree damage, window breakage or outdoor furniture damage be sure and call JNT Construction as soon as possible. We will be available right away to come to your home to do an immediate inspection and assess the hail damage and give you a quote.

How to Prepare Your Home for Spring and Hail Season

We all know the saying “April showers bring May flowers,” but sometimes it can also bring unexpected hailstorms, and in Texas, even unexpected heat waves!

It’s important to make sure that your home roof and exterior are as prepared as possible for inclement weather so we’ve put together a simple list of steps you can take to assure that your home will be the last one standing.

Get an Inspection Early in the Season

You may not be aware of damages that have already taken place on your existing roof so it’s important to assess that early on before they further damage occurs. Repair or replace missing, cracked, or worn shingles. And if a replacement is in order it’s better to replace it now before the situation worsens. You can book an inspection here on our homepage.

Know your Insurance policy

Does your insurance cover roof damage? Now is a god time to find out as much detail as possible. Most insurance carriers and policies will cover the cost of repairs for hail damage, if yours does not consider switching providers as soon as possible. It’s also possible that could have a higher deductible for hail or wind damage than other weather related claims so be sure to research that as well.

Trim Back Trees

The trees surrounding your home can be beautiful, but they can also be dangerous. It’s important to properly landscape and monitor your tree growth. Cutting or trimming branches near your roof to can significantly reduce the risk of damage to your home’s exterior.

Check weather regularly

This may be a no-brainer but knowing your local weather daily can help to prepare you and your family for a hailstorm in advance!

Safety Tip: During a hailstorm – Remain Indoors!

  • Stay away from glass doors, skylights, and patios to avoid broken glass
  • Close blinds and drapes to prevent debris from coming inside
  • Park your car in a covered area if possible

After a Hail Storm

If an unfortunate event occurs and you were caught in a hailstorm that you not prepared for here’s what to look for right afterward:

  • Large spots or dents on the roof
  • Missing granules in your gutters
  • Water spots throughout the house (especially in the attic)

If you notice any of these, act immediately and call your local JNT representative to come and assess the damage. You can reach us at (214) 614-8177.

Preparing your roof for the winter in DFW: What you need to know.

If you’re from Texas then you know just how unpredictable our weather can be. One minute it’s a cool 67 and the next the whole city is shut down due to an ice storm. It’s important to prepare your family for winter with things like proper clothing and safe driving tips but it’s equally important to also prepare your home. Strong wind, ice dams and snow accumulation can cause major damage, by preparing for these things you can help to ensure that a minor problem doesn’t become an larger, more expensive issue.

Here is a list of things you can do to extend the life of your home by preparing your roof for the worst.

1) Clear the Gutters:

This may seem like a no brainer but you would be surprised as to how many people leave it to nature to clear them. Cluttered gutters can form ice dams, which are formed by the build up of ice or snow on the eaves of your home causing water to get inside. Run a hose in the gutter and downspouts to flush out the accumulated debris of the previous season.

*Quick tip* Check for shingle debris (tiny granules) while cleaning the gutters, if you find them this means your shingles are ready to be replaced.

2) Cut or Remove any over Hanging Branches or Obstructions

Be sure to trim back tall trees or protruding branches annually to protect the roof not just from a limb’s unexpected fall, but also from leaves and debris that can pile up in those gutters we mentioned before.

3) Sweep your chimney and check for cracks or broken parts

The air in your home is constantly moving, if your chimney is blocked or dirty, the air can’t flow out properly causing possible home fires. Not sure how to clean it? Call a professional like JNT Construction or click here for more information.

4) Prepare your windows

If you had screens on your windows during the summer, replace them with your storm windows. Wash those and all other windows while the weather is still warm enough to use a garden hose. Store the old screens in a safe place to prevent any damage.

Additionally, if the gaps between siding and window or doorframes are bigger than the width of a nickel, you need to reapply exterior caulk.

We know this is the busiest time of the year so if you’re stuck on finding the time to prepare, give us a call today for a free inspection.

Roofing Contractors | Things Preformed By A General Contractor

JNT is more than just another Dallas roofing contractor.  We also do extensive renovations, rebuilds, and even large commercial projects.  Here’s a list of things that your favorite roofing contractors in Dallas typically perform on  small and large commercial jobs.

When they need a contractor, many people just assume that he’ll be some kind of a handyman that’ll help them around with whatever task they need him for. From carpentry to gardening, you can find a contractor for anything, right? Nope. A handyman is a person who’s just that, handy when you need them. On the other hand, commercial contractors are typically procured for work if any commercial construction is required whether it is only a slight renovation job or building from scratch. Buildings that are classified under commercial include the following structures: roads, office buildings, shopping centers and schools.

Even then, each contractor specializes in one or two different forms of construction, so it is quite common to find one or two different commercial contractors working together on one building project. Here’s a look at the work typically performed by a commercial contractor:

Building

When there’s a new shopping mall or even a shop opening up, you can be sure to find commercial contractors hard at work building over there. Commercial contractors are usually the ones who help interpret the architects’ dream, changing the blue print from paper in to real life.

Renovation

Sometimes, a few commercial buildings are closed down or shuttered up for quite some time or just have taken too much wear and tear from the elements. Whatever the reason that caused the disrepair, when these buildings are resold, commercial contractors work on renovating and scaling them to the new purposes’ requirements.

Painting

This is more of a finishing touch once all repairs are done but definitely falls under the duties of the commercial contractor. However, once more, just like their building projects, their painting commissions are more heavy duty and can be much more extensive.

Exterior Aspects

Commercial contractors are skilled at dealing with the exterior of most buildings. Commercial buildings need to be visually appealing and no one knows that or does that better than a commercial builder. However, based on the size and magnitude of the build they undertake, it can, at times, take a lot of time before the build is completed.

Roads and Other Commercial Builds

Often times, commercial contractors are the ones whom you see laying down the tarmac on roads, building bridges, laying down train tracks etc. Although these are heavy duty industrial projects, they usually require a dedicated team of commercial contractors working in conjunction with engineers, subcontractors and other technicians.

Commercial contractors also work on a contractual basis which can be on weekly, monthly or yearly term. Easily available for work all year round, they are usually team based and can offer all the services that can help establish your new building. Oftentimes, all one needs to do is go to a contractor with a blueprint, show them the piece of land, get their feedback and start work. Most commercial contractors also work in close conjunction with a sub contractor. These guys act like liaison workers between the commercial contractor and the clients as well as the commercial contractors and the other engineers etc.
